Google unveiled on Wednesday new Glass apps that offer different content-consumption options on the device.
The tech giant announced three new apps in an official Google+ blog post: the Wall Street Journal Glass app, Weather Alert, and Winkfeed.
Winkfeed is an app that allows Glass users to pull in their favorite RSS news feeds to display on their devices. One feature in the app, which is currently only available to select beta testers, monitors major social trends on the Internet, keeping you updated on breaking news as it happens.
“[W]e monitor trending Twitter topics and top Reddit posts,” Aaron Kasten, chief operating officer of Winklogic, the firm behind Winkfeed, told Mashable. “If something shows up in either, we compare it to the Associated Press feed. If there is a match, we send the matching article to the trend’s subscribers.”
With the winking functionality enabled in Glass’ latest update, Winkfeed’s name might lead some to believe that the app requires winking to work. However, the app’s current version doesn’t include any “wink-control.”
“As our naming convention indicates, we’ve been excited to use the wink capability for a long time, and now that it’s possible we plan to experiment with it in Winkfeed and future projects,” Kasten said.
The Wall Street Journal Glass app lets users read and listen to the newspaper’s stories, while Weather Alert sends breaking weather alerts to the device, including tornado and storm warnings.
